The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), the premiere association for special educators, works to improve the educational success of individuals with disabilities and/or gifts and talents. Winners of these Montana CEC Awards will be forwarded to International CEC so nominees can be eligible to receive the National CEC Awards in 2009.

Teacher of the Year Award

The Teacher of the Year Award recognizes a CEC member (teacher or related service provider) who currently provides direct services to students with exceptionalities. The Teacher of the Year is an outstanding member of the profession whose work exemplifies the best in special education teaching. His or her work reflects significant educational success for students, continued professional development, and the highest standards of educational quality. The Montana CEC winner will be nominated for the CEC Clarissa Hug Award.

Nominee Eligibility Requirement

·         Must be a CEC member in good standing currently and for at least the previous 3 years
·        
Must currently provide direct services to students with exceptionalities
·        
Must hold professional certification in the area in which the nominee provides services
·        
The work of the nominee must be consistent with CEC’s mission statement as described in the first paragraph

The Business Award recognizes a business or corporation that has promoted and provided for the enhancement and employment of individuals with exceptionalities in order to promote and support their full participation in the community.

Nominee Eligibility Requirement

·         Must be a for-profit business or corporation
·        
May be a private or public business or corporation of any size
·        
The efforts of the business or corporation being recognized must be consistent with CEC’s mission statement as described in the first paragraph
·        
Businesses whose primary purpose is providing services to individuals with disabilities are not eligible

                                                          Public Service Award

The Outstanding Public Service Award recognizes an individual from the United States or Canada whose actions in the governmental and political arena have been of national significance for individuals with exceptionalities.

Nominee Eligibility Requirement

     • Promotion of beneficial legislation
     • Protection of beneficial legislation
     • Outstanding public advocacy as a spokesperson

                                                    Special Education Research Award

The Special Education Research Award recognizes an individual or research team whose research has made significant contributions to the education of exceptional children and youth.

Nominee Eligibility Requirement

  • Nominee may be an individual or research team
  • The work of the nominee must be consistent with CEC’s mission statement as described in the first paragraph
  • Nominee must be a CEC member

                                                                       Leadership Award

The Outstanding Leadership Award recognizes a CEC member who has been a driving force in the organization, resulting in the Council being recognized for its commitment, leadership, and dedication to service for students with exceptionalities. The award honors a CEC member who has made significant contributions to the Council’s programs and activities at the local, state/provincial, national, and/or international level over an extended period of time.

Nominee Eligibility Requirements

·         Must be a current CEC member and have maintained active membership at the local, state/provincial, and national/international levels for 10 years or more
·        
The work of the nominee must be consistent with CEC’s mission statement as described in the first paragraph
·         Posthumous nominations are not accepted

                      Special Education Lifetime Achievement Award

The Special Education Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual who has made continued and sustained contributions to the education of children and youth with exceptionalities. The Montana winner will be nominated for the National J. E. Wallace Wallin Special Education Lifetime Achievement Award.

Nominee Eligibility Requirement

·        
The nominee must have a prominent reputation nationally or internationally and have made significant contributions to the education of children with exceptionalities in two or more of the following areas: publications; research; development of new concepts, approaches, or programs; improved psychological or educational evaluation procedures; improved administrative procedures; practical application of improved teaching techniques; and dynamic leadership
·         The work of the nominee must be consistent with CEC’s mission statement as described in the first paragraph
·        
The nominee does not have to be a CEC member

***Recipients of the Teacher of the Year Award, the Distinguished Service Award, the Public Service Award, CEC Outstanding Leadership Award, Special Education Lifetime Achievement Award will be recognized on Thursday evening, April 16, during the Spring 2009 MCEC Conference on Diverse Abilities at the Hilton Garden Inn and Missoula Conference Center in Missoula.
